Lace up your running shoes and head to Brunswick and The Golden Isles of Georgia

Attention, runners! Lace up those shoes and get ready to run amid the beautiful surroundings of Brunswick and The Golden Isles! During February you can participate in two great running events: the annual Southeast Georgia Health System Bridge Run in Brunswick and the annual Super Dolphin Day Race on St. Simons Island.

SOUTHEAST GA HEALTH SYSTEM BRIDGE RUN - Feb. 19

Georgia's toughest 5K run takes place Saturday, Feb. 19 in Brunswick, GA. The ninth annual Southeast Georgia Health System Bridge Run will take competitors over the Sidney Lanier Bridge, the state's tallest cable stayed suspension bridge at 480 feet and 7,000 feet long. The U.S. Track and Field Association certified the run in 2006.

In addition to the run, there will be a variety of family activities including a 5K walk, an interactive fishing booth provided by the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources, live entertainment, and food vendors.

The event begins at the southern foot of the bridge on Highway 17. To accommodate the anticipated crowd size of approximately 2,000 runners and walkers, there are new start times for the 2011 event:

• 8:30 a.m. Runners (Individuals)
• 9:00 a.m. Fire Fighter Challenge
• 9:10 a.m. Teams (Runners & Walkers)
• 9:30 a.m. Walkers (Individuals)

The awards presentation will take place at approximately 11 a.m. on stage.

Registration is $25 by Feb. 12 and $35 thereafter. For persons joining a team of 10 or more members, are $23 per person. All runners must register prior to the race-there will be no race day registration for runners this year. Walkers, however, will be able to register the day of the race. Because of the steep grade of the bridge, no strollers or inline skates will be allowed.

There will be a pre-run pasta party Friday, Feb. 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on the deck of Coastal Kitchen Seafood and Raw Bar at the Morningstar Golden Isles Marina on St. Simons Island. Participants will be able to pick up their pre-registration packets, race numbers and t-shirts at the party.

Proceeds from the run will benefit Southeast Georgia Health System's cancer programs.

SUPER DOLPHIN DAY RACE - Feb. 26

The 33nd annual Super Dolphin Day Race will take place Saturday, Feb. 26. Events include certified 5K and 10K races and a one mile Fun Run. The 10K run will begin at 7:30 am. The Mile Fun Run will begin at 9:00 am followed by the 5K race at 10:00. The event will take place at the St. Simons Island Casino, 530 Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island.

The traditional pre-race pasta party will take place in the St. Simons Island Elementary School cafeteria, Friday Feb. 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The Silent Auction starts at the Pasta Party (5:30) and concludes on Race Day at 10:45. Winners announced during awards ceremony.

Super Dolphin Day is the largest fundraiser for St. Simons and Oglethorpe Point Elementary Schools. All donations are tax-deductible and go to support the schools' PTAs. Entrants can register during the pasta party, or on race day up to 30 minutes prior to their event. Enjoy dinner and help solve a neighborhood mystery

Ricki Mortis is beginning to realize why he got his new home for a song; his neighbors are loony.

In the four months he's lived there, Ricki has been accused of stealing lawn ornaments, soliciting foolish relationships, disregarding the town building code, and murdering a beloved family pet.

Whether he is guilty of these crimes or not remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the damage is done: The neighbors hate him.

In an effort to mend fences and reverse bad first impressions, Ricki invites the neighbors to a good old-fashioned dinner. But when the guests arrive, they find something quite unexpected. Ricki Mortis is dead.

You're invited to help solve help solve the mystery Saturday, Jan. 30, during "Welcome to the Neighborhood," a Mystery Dinner at the Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth by the Sea.

According to museum director Judi Fergus, selected dinner guests are assigned various roles in the story. "You won't know until it starts who is involved and who isn't," Fergus explained. "They're really a lot of fun."

Comedy, romance the focus of February writers conference

Comedy, romance and new trends in publishing will be the topics of presentations and workshops during the Scribbler's Retreat Writers Conference, Feb. 11-13 at the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island.

In keeping with its mission to provide "world-class authors, speakers and lecturers," the February conference will include these speakers:

Adam Davies - Keynote speaker for the conference, this former Random House editor is the author of three novels including "The Frog King," soon to be a major motion picture with script by Bret Easton Ellis; "Goodbye Lemon," a family drama; and "Mine All Mine," which was purchased for film with the author to write the screenplay. His nonfiction has appeared in the New York Times and he has made many appearances on radio and TV including NPR and "Breakfast With the Arts" on A&E.

Haywood Smith - This delightfully funny writer is author of "The Red Hat Club" and "The Red Hat Club Rides Again," both of which have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List. The paperback version of her novel, "Queen Bee of Mimosa Branch" appeared on USA Today's and New York Times' bestseller lists. Other books include "Traditions of Magnificant Mothers-In-Law," "Wedding Belles," "Highland Princess," "Secret in Satin," "Ladies of the Lake" and, coming this fall, "Waking Up in Dixie."

Daniel Black - An associate professor at Clark Atlanta University, he is the author of "They Tell Me of a Home," "The Sacred Place" and his latest novel, "Perfect Peace." He is the founder of Ndugu-Nzinga, a group whose focus is to instill principle and character in the lives of African American youth. His talk is entitled, "Way, Way Down South: African American Storytelling as Literature."

Scribbler's Retreat hosts four conferences per year, with a focus on scholarship students as well as professional and budding writers who wish to hone their craft. Each two-day conference features ten speakers. Conferences begin with an opening banquet and feature an "Evening with the Author" cocktail reception on Saturday.

Glynn County announces plan for second phase of Neptune Park improvements

The St. Simons Island pier and Neptune Park will be getting a facelift this winter, according to the Glynn County Commission. The commission recently announced the second and final phase of the Neptune Park improvement plan, which includes updates and enhancements to the pier, playground area, oceanside walk and picnic area.

The work continues the improvements made in 2008-09 during Phase I, which was completed in May 2009 with the opening of the Neptune Park Fun Zone. The Fun Zone includes an oceanside pool, miniature golf, playground and concession stand.

The St. Simons Island pier will get a new stainless steel roof, new railings, sea turtle-friendly lighting, a low masonry seat wall and shade structures, and new concrete pavers at the pier entrance. In addition, the "Johnson rocks" around and beneath the pier will be replenished.

The nearby playground area will get a new toddler playground, replacing the existing structure. Permeable concrete pavers will be place beneath the live oak tree, and the current seating area will be replaced.

Along the oceanfront, the walkway will be upgraded with concrete pavers and turtle-friendly lighting, similar to that installed near the Fun Zone and St. Simons Island Lighthouse. New bike racks, benches and a gazebo will be placed along the walkway, and Georgia Power will relocate existing overhead wiring and install new streetlights.

At the picnic area, the existing flag stones beneath the live oaks will be replaced with permeable pavers. The small barbecue grills will be replaced; the large brick grill and existing picnic tables will remain.

Park-wide improvements will include additional benches and trash receptacles throughout the park, landscape enhancements and a new irrigation system.

Neptune Park is traditionally the social center of St. Simons Island, drawing tens of thousands of people each year for fishing, swimming, picnics and a variety of special events. The improvements are making a great thing even better, according to local resident Pat Morris.

"The improvements to Neptune Park, particularly the pool, have been great," Morris said. "I was here when the old pool was being used; in fact, my kids grew up using that pool. However, there was never the usage with that pool that we saw with the new one this summer. It was great.

"I know many are against change in any form, but change is going to happen; we can either stand by and let it or take charge and control it. The commissioners thought ahead and stepped in to control it. I commend them. It all speaks to the quality of life we have here on St. Simons Island."

Coastal festival is for the birds ... and bird lovers

Coastal Georgia is known for many things, not the least of which is the abundance of birds that make their homes here. With its vast network of rivers, marshes and barrier islands, Brunswick and The Golden Isles provide habitats for hundreds of species of birds.

Learn all about them and other coastal wildlife at the Coastal Birding and Nature Festival, Oct. 8-12. This year's festival includes a great variety of field trips and seminars, led by birding and nature exhibits from throughout the U.S. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Don Kroodsma, who will share the glories of "The Singing Life of Birds."

Who's watching whom?

Do you know that our little section of the Georgia coast is considered a birding hot spot? Of course you do! Bird watching – or, birding – is a wonderful pastime that offers plenty of exercise and enjoyment with minimal impact on you or the environment. And you don't have to go far at all to do it.

There are at least a dozen good places to go birding in our area: Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation and the Earth Day Nature Trail in Brunswick: Gould's Inlet and the John Gilbert Nature Trail on St. Simons Island; Clam Creek and St. Andrews recreation areas on Jekyll Island and, of course, Little St. Simons Island just to name a few.

Each of these are spots along the Georgia Coast Birding Trail, which was established by the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources non-game wildlife division seven years ago. To see a map of the trail, go here.

Celebrate coastal history, culture at Glynn Art Fall Festival

Celebrate coastal Georgia history and culture, and enjoy contemporary works by many of the region's best artists and craftspeople, at the 40th Annual Golden Isles Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10 and 11, in Postell Park on Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island.

In addition to featuring works by more than 15o artists, the Association will present a program of Gullah-Geechee performances, workshops, demonstrations and storytelling. The McIntosh County Shouters, Gospel Messengers, Georgia Sea Island Singers, Youth Praise Group and storyteller Cornelia Bailey will entertain and educate during performances Saturday.

Yvonne Grovner, Master Basket Weaver, and Stanley Walker, Master Net Maker, will conduct workshops and demonstrations throughout the day. There also will be a special presentation by Denise White Fields of the African American Museum. Participating artists will exhibit in one of two categories:

• FINE ARTS/GRAPHICS: Acrylic, Oil, Watercolor, Pastel, Charcoal, Pencil, Pen & Ink, Printmaking, Mixed Media, Photography

Stewbilee Rocks Downtown Brunswick Saturday Oct. 10

October is Festival Month in Brunswick and The Golden Isles of Georgia, with festivals, art shows and special events nearly every weekend this month. This coming weekend is no exception, as downtown Brunswick gears up for the fifth annual Brunswick Stewbilee at Mary Ross Waterfront Park.

This traditional small-town festival brings together a lot of big-town talent to compete in the annual Brunswick Stew cookoff. More than 60 teams, representing local and regional corporations, government agencies, civic groups and other organizations, will face off in "Peoples' Choice" and professionally judged competition, for the honor of having their concoctions named "Best Brunswick Stew." Teams also will be judged for having the most creative presentation in their booths.


Saturday’s events begin at 8:00 am with the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia 5K Freedom Run. This is the first year for the Club to handle the logistics of the Run. Interested runners and walkers can register online at www.brunswickstewbilee.com. Proceeds from the Run benefit local programs for the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia.

The Pooch Parade is being organized by the Brunswick Women’s Club. All area pooches are invited to put on their finest dogwear and enter their owners in the parade. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes, and all registration money for the parade goes to local animal control and the Humane Society.

The Brunswick Stew Tasting Contest begins at 11:30 a.m. as more than 60 teams vie for top honors of the tastiest stew. Brunswick, Ga. "The Brunswick Kiwanis Club is again excited to work with many other community groups and businesses to bring a world-class event to Brunswick," said Shaw McVeigh, of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club, which organizes the stew tasting contest. “If you have a Brunswick stew that always receives praise, then we encourage you to come to our area and size it up against some stiff competition.”

Festival goers will have many activities from which to choose as they enjoy the Brunswick Rockin' Stewbilee, including a classic car and motorcycle show, arts and crafts, and the ever popular "Junior Stewbie" fun zone for kids. Local and regional bands, including Malarkey, Marshgrass Bluegrass, WharfRatz, StringRays, OSKAR Rockhammer, and Dennis and the Menace, will perform in a free open-air concert throughout the day.
