Future writer discovers fun, wonder in Brunswick and The Golden Isles of Georgia

Many people, upon their first visits to Brunswick and The Golden Isles, are mesmerized by the abundant natural beauty, relaxed pace and friendly people they find here. So it was for 14 year-old Shannon, who recently visited our area for the first time with her aunt, travel writer Hope Philbrick.

Shannon, who lives in Minnesota, was es
pecially charmed by her voyage aboard the Lady Jane shrimp, captained by Larry Credle. I invited Shannon, whom I learned is an aspiring journalist, to write something for this blog about her adventure. She shared the following:

Let’s go shrimpin’! Located in Brunswick is the Lady Jane shrimp boat. The Lady Jane (which is open to anyone) takes people on an adventure of catching shrimp.

Captain Larry said that when he was younger he would go shrimpin’ with his dad and would tell his da
d that people are curious to see how we catch shrimp and would pay to have a tour. Now years later, that’s just what he does.

Shortly after leaving the dock, the crew lowers a big net for about 15 to 20 minutes. When they pull the nets up it’s surprising to see what has been caught besides shrimp! There are fish, sharks, stingrays, squids, jellyfish, and more!

There is never a dull moment on the Lady Jane. The crew is wonderful and it’s a great time, so hop on and catch some shrimp!

Thanks, Shannon, for sharing your story with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon in Brunswick and The Golden Isles of Georgia!

Brunswick's Ritz Theatre announces Summer Classic Movies

The Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association (GIAHA) presents the 2010 season of Summer Classic Movies at the Ritz, featuring classic Hollywood films they way they were meant to be seen. Screenings are Thursdays July 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 7:00 pm, with a special matinee screening Sunday Aug. 1 at 3:00 pm at the Ritz Theatre, 1530 Newcastle St. in downtown Brunswick.

“We scoured the vaults for some of the greatest movies in Hollywood history, with something to please just about every taste,” notes GIAHA’s film programming coordinator Rob Nixon. “Over the past few years, we’ve taken suggestions and requests from our audiences and put their ideas into the programming mix this summer to give film lovers what they most enjoy. We’re especially glad we can honor the many requests we’ve received to bring Gone with the Wind to the big screen at the Ritz.”

The 2010 line-up includes two rousing musicals: Yankee Doodle Dandy (July 1), the perfect patriotic way to kick off the Independence Day weekend, and Meet Me in St. Louis (July 15), a warmly nostalgic period piece for the whole family. The series also includes a romantic comedy, The Philadelphia Story (July 8), starring one of the most popular stars featured in past seasons, Cary Grant; Strangers on a Train (July 22), a Hitchcock thriller that audiences rarely get the opportunity to see; and Bonnie and Clyde (July 29), a modern classic that changed the face of American cinema in the 1960s. And of course, there’s the immortal epic with Rhett and Scarlett, the most famous couple in screen history, as the series grand finale (August 1).

Once again, there will be a selection of fun cartoons and short subjects beginning about a half hour before show time. Plus, audiences can bring their own snacks and enjoy free popcorn (first come, first served), courtesy of Angie Aimar of Coldwell Banker Platinum Partners. There will also be giveaways and special offers from several local merchants and pre-show dining at most downtown restaurants.

The special Aug. 1 matinee offers audiences two ways to see Gone with the Wind. Pay the regular $5 ticket price and watch the movie beginning at 3:00 p.m. (short subjects at 2:30), with an intermission at 5 p.m. Or for only $12, you will get admission to the movie and a delicious "Southern Soul Silver Screen Snack Sack" at intermission catered by Southern Soul Barbeque: a taste of the Old South featuring a pulled pork slider and two sides. Take it back into the theater with you and enjoy it during the second half of the show! These advance tickets must be purchased by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30. Get them at the Ritz box office, 1530 Newcastle St., Downtown Brunswick, or on line at goldenislesarts.org.

Admission to each show in the Summer Classic Movies series at the Ritz is only $5 for all ages. For more information, call GIAHA at 912-262-6934 or visit goldenislesarts.org.

SUMMER CLASSIC MOVIES AT THE RITZ COMPLETE SERIES SCHEDULE
(Click on photos for video clips)

Thursday, July 1, 7 pmYankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
The great tough guy of the Silver Screen gets wildly patriotic in this crowd-pleasing musical based on the life of the most famous showman of the early 20th century, George M. Cohan. James Cagney won a much-deserved Academy Award for his acting, singing and dancing in this celebration of unbridled show biz chutzpah and American optimism, featuring such classic songs as “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and the lively title tune. You’ll be tempted to sing along (fine with us, as long as your neighbors don’t mind) and maybe even try your hand at Cagney’s famous tap dance down a grand staircase—just not in the Ritz balcony, please! Come dressed in your most patriotic outfit!

Thursday, July 8, 7 pmThe Philadelphia Story (1940)
After being declared “Box Office Poison” in the late 1930s and returning to her roots on the stage, Katharine Hepburn made a triumphant comeback in motion pictures with this comedy based on her runaway Broadway success. The Great Kate stars as spoiled, willful Tracy Lord, a high society bride-to-be whose world is turned upside down on the eve of her wedding by romantic complications involving two men in her life…who aren’t her groom! And no wonder, when the two men turn out to be the suave and sly Cary Grant and lovable James Stewart, who won an Oscar as the reporter who learns a few surprising things about how the other half lives.

Thursday, July 15, 7 pmMeet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Fans of classic movies at the Ritz love musicals, and here’s one of the very best, a treat for the entire family. This is classic Hollywood studio filmmaking at its height: lavishly detailed Technicolor art direction and costuming, musical production and performance by the top talents in the industry, and masterful direction by Vincente Minnelli that takes us through the life of a loving family around the time of the grand 1904 World’s Fair. And it features the legendary Judy Garland at her peak, singing such old favorites as “The Trolley Song,” “The Boy Next Door,” and the heartbreaking “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Thursday, July 22, 7 pm Strangers on a Train (1951)
No one did suspense like Alfred Hitchcock, and here’s a chance to see one of his most acclaimed but rarely screened classics, a strangely twisted story about a young man who unwittingly makes a murderous deal with a stranger he meets on a train journey. Robert Walker is creepy and darkly funny as the wealthy, sinister Bruno. Farley Granger is the famous tennis pro ensnared in Bruno’s deadly trap. But the real star, of course, is Alfred Hitchcock, the director who brought tales of mystery to their most anxiety-producing heights, finding terror in the most ordinary, benign settings—like an amusement park that turns out to be anything but amusing!

Thursday, July 29, 7 pmBonnie and Clyde (1967)
Arthur Penn’s take on the legendary outlaw duo of the Depression had a tremendous impact on popular culture when it was released in the late 1960s, setting new trends in cinematic style, depictions of screen violence (fairly tame by today’s standards), even fashion. As Clyde Barrow, Warren Beatty emerged as a major force in the industry, and Faye Dunaway became an overnight star as Bonnie Parker. But what audiences love most about this landmark film is its mixture of breezy humor and intense drama, its poignant take on society’s outcasts and doomed love, and the way it draws us in to the creation of a distinctly American myth.

Sunday, August 1, 3 pmGone with the Wind (1939)
What can we say about this enduring classic that hasn’t been said many times before? That Margaret Mitchell’s tale of the Old South is one of the most successful and beloved movies of all time? That Scarlett O’Hara is one of the most headstrong and unforgettable heroines in American movies? That Rhett Butler, frankly, doesn’t give a damn? Let’s just say this: If you’ve never seen it on the big screen (or at all), you owe it to yourself. And GIAHA is making it even more attractive with a special matinee event that will give you the full epic experience and still get you home at a reasonable hour, including a special intermission sack-snack for advance ticket holders.

Admission to each show in the Summer Classic Movies series at the Ritz is only $5 for all ages. For more information, call GIAHA at 912-262-6934 or visit goldenislesarts.org.

Innovative puzzle wins Calendar Marketing Association awards

A custom-made jigsaw puzzle, featuring the work of internationally known calendar artist Pilliard Dickle and commissioned by the Brunswick-Golden Isles CVB, has received four Gold Awards from the Calendar Marketing Association, a trade group for the calendar industry.

The puzzle was part of a promotional package developed by the CVB to market Brunswick and The Golden Isles as a destination of choice for tours, meetings and individual travel. Three versions of the puzzle were printed; each version featured an original Pilliard Dickle calendar on the front, and one of three targeted messages on the back, for tour operators, meeting planners or travel writers.

In the Miscellaneous Calendar category, the puzzle received a Gold Award for “Most Creative Marketing Application” in the national division, and “Most Original” in the international division.

The puzzle also received Gold Awards for “Most Original Promotion” in the national division, and for “Most Original Calendar” in the international division.

The calendar, created especially for the CVB, shows Brunswick and The Golden Isles - St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island - through the eyes of Dickle, known around the world for his portrayals of "Calendaria," a fanciful land of castles, airships, pyramids, flying houses and more, where everyday locations become years and common objects become months and days.

"Pilliard's calendars have a wonderful charm, with their whimsical portrayals of everyday scenes and bright colors," explained Bill Tipton, executive director of the CVB. "We are pleased and flattered that an artist of his stature agreed to create this original work of art just for us, and excited to receive this additional recognition.

"We have received many positive comments from meeting planners, tour operators, travel writers and others who received the puzzle," Tipton said. "It reminds people in a fun way that Brunswick and the Golden Isles are a great place to visit and conduct business meetings. We consider it be a very successful promotion in that regard, and are pleased that the Calendar Marketing Association agrees."

Brunswick and The Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau is the official Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for Glynn County, Georgia including the City of Brunswick, Georgia and four barrier islands: St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island.
The CVB's mission is to create awareness of and interest in Brunswick & The Golden Isles of Georgia as a destination for vacations, meetings and group visits. This is done through an array of programs and initiatives that include paid advertising, public relations, sales and marketing, a comprehensive area web site and operating three area welcome centers.

Pilliard Dickle, aka Joe Chandler, is an internationally known artist who lives on St. Simons Island. His calendars have won the World Calendar Award from The Calendar Marketing Association. A collection of his calendars has been published as a book, The Calendar World of Pilliard Dickle (Longstreet Press, Atlanta). Thanks to favorable reviews by such luminaries as David Letterman and Gene Shalit, Dickle has built a solid base of fans that eagerly await his yearly calendar creation. To learn more about Pilliard and Calendaria, visit www.PilliardDickle.com

The Calendar Marketing Association is the only worldwide trade association for the calendar industry. Based in Wheaton, IL, the CMA was founded in 1989 to represent the interests of designers, marketers, publishers, printers and suppliers of both retail and custom calendars. For information, visit

Check out Georgia's Longest Yard Sale March 12-13

Georgia's longest yard sale, the Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale, takes place March 12 and 13. This 211-mile long treasure hunt follows US Highway 341 from Culloden in central Georgia to Brunswick and The Golden Isles on the Georgia coast.

The first Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale was held in 2005 and ran from Perry, Georgia to the coast. My son, Richard, and I drove the route starting in Perry and working our way south. We discovered that Hwy 341 is a beautiful drive that takes you through at least a dozen small towns and villages. One of my favorites was Lumber City, where the local VFW served delicious barbecued chicken dinners just steps away from the community's yard sale site. Others included Hazlehurst, which had an expansive yard sale site in its community park, and Helena with its interesting old hotel next to the railroad tracks.

Each community has its own "official" yard sale site, which is identified by Peaches to the Beaches signs and banners. In addition, you'll typically find "unofficial" yard sales at shops, homes, churches and other sites along the way.

Offerings are what you would expect for any yard sale or flea market, and run the gamut from antiques and collectibles to arts and crafts, used clothing and household items and, of course, all sorts of food.

Peaches to the Beaches is modeled after the "World's Longest Yard Sale," which covers 654 miles from Ohio to Gadsden Alabama. It was begun by Evelyn Simmons, then interim president of the Golden Isles Parkway Association, which organizes the yearly event.

Held the second weekend in March, the annual sale's popularity has grown and the route has expanded from its original 172 miles to its current 211. Many "early birds" flock to the Friday sales in search of the best treasures, though Saturday seems to be the biggest sale day. For a complete listing and schedule, click here.

If you're looking for a delightful weekend activity, consider a road trip to the Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale. It's a great way to explore a beautiful segment of Georgia!

Whimsical Calendar wins national award

A limited edition calendar commissioned by the Brunswick and The Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau has been recognized in national and international competition by the Calendar Marketing Association.

The calendar, created by international calendar artist and St. Simons Island resident Pilliard Dickle, received a Gold Award for "Most Original Promo" in the 2009 World and National Calendar Awards. The annual competition is open to all those involved in the production, distribution and marketing of calendars - advertising agencies, artists, designers, photographers, printers, publishers, etc.

"We are pleased and flattered that an artist of his stature agreed to create this original work of art just for us, and excited to receive this additional recognition."

The calendar was created especially for travel writers, meeting planners, and group tour operators, as a unique reminder to consider Brunswick and The Golden Isles as a subject for travel articles, and as a destination for meetings, tours, reunions and other gatherings. The calendar was mailed to more than 1,000 individuals in January; many calendars were numbered and signed by the artist, increasing their value as collectibles.

"We received a lot of positive comments from travel writers and others who received the calendar," Tipton said.

For information, call toll-free 800-933-COAST (2627) or visit them online at www.ComeCoastAwhile.com

The Calendar Marketing Association is the only worldwide trade association for the calendar industry. Based in Wheaton, IL, the CMA was founded in 1989 to represent the interests of designers, marketers, publishers, printers and suppliers of both retail and custom calendars.
